Dermaplaning is a relatively new beauty treatment that is taking the beauty world by storm. I’ve only ever tried it at home using the Dreamiskin Eco-Friendly DermaRazor. So, I was really keen to get into the salon and see what the professional results were like.
I made a booking with Mardi Johnson at The Skin Club Bowral, NSW, a luxe, private salon tucked away in a quiet corner of the idyllic country town. Mardi works alone and only ever has one client at a time, so you truly feel as though you’re Queen for the day the second you walk through the door.
What Exactly Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning involves using a surgical scalpel to remove peach fuzz and dead cells from the skin. While the tool I used at home did a fair job, it’s not quite of the same standard as the blades used in-salon, which are sterile, surgical scalpels. Sounds scary? It’s not. You just need to ensure you visit a reputable, top-notch salon and aesthetician.
“Dermaplaning is actually very non-invasive and quite relaxing,” explains Mardi. “We hold the blade at around a 45 degree angle and use small movements across sections of the face. It removes the fine hairs, while providing a thorough exfoliation.”
I was certainly in need of a good desquamation, so was ready to let Mardi’s magic hands work on my complexion.
Glowing Skin In A Few Simple Steps
I lay on the bed and Mardi wrapped me up in a warm blanket, before cleansing my face of make-up. She then began moving the blade across my face, working in small sections at a time. The feeling was quite unusual, but not at all painful. As Mardi said, it really was quite relaxing. I could hear a quiet scraping sound and I could feel the dermaplaning blade actually lifting away the layer of debris and dead cells that was clinging to my skin’s surface. Aside from the results, I think that was actually the best part about the treatment – I could actually feel and hear it working!
After Mardi had worked the blade over my entire face and neck, she placed a Medik8 Ultimate Recovery Bio-Cellulose Mask and then popped me under the Lutronic Healite LED Lamp. This combination works to promote skin repair and rejuvenation, and to further stimulate collagen production.
Following a relaxing 10 minutes under the lamp, Mardi applied Medik8 Hydr8 B5 Liquid Rehydration Serum as well as Super C Ferulic Potent Vitamin C Brightening Serum. She then completed the treatment with an application of Ultimate Recovery Skin Restoring Moisture Locking Cream.
The Verdict?
My skin was a little red immediately following the treatment, which is a result of the deep exfoliation, as well as the stimulation of blood the the skin’s surface. This ultimately means that the skin is also receiving a good dose of oxygen and nutrients from within, too. When I looked in the mirror the following day though, it was smooth, even-textured and luminous.
“Dermaplaning exfoliates your face, leaving your skin with a more rejuvenated, brighter, and youthful appearance,” explains Mardi. “It also unclogs the pores, so your face takes on a new glow. By removing the layer of debris on the surface of the skin, it also improves the efficiency of your at-home skincare products.”
How Frequently Should You Have It Done?
For best results, it’s recommended that you have dermaplaning performed every four to six weeks. “This gives the skin time to complete its rejuvenation cycle before your next treatment,” says Mardi. “Regular dermaplaning treatments can improve skin tone, brightness and texture. It can also minimise the appearance of hyperpigmentation and age spots, as well as ease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The deep exfoliation associated with this treatment spurs collagen production, which leaves the skin plumped and healthy.”
Dermaplaning is also great for troubled skin types.
“By deeply cleansing the skin, clearing the pores, and removing the fine facial hairs that can trap oil and dirt, we can help beat breakouts,” adds Mardi. “And as an added bonus, your make-up is easier to apply. it has a smooth, debris-free canvas on which to be blended.”
How Much Does It Cost?
My 60 minute treatment, including the LED lamp, was $90, but prices will vary depending on the salon you go to, and if you have any add-ons, such as lash and brow tinting.
