Salon Lane launches in Sydney this October, the first move-in ready, private studios and communal hair and beauty stations.

The hair and beauty salon studios concept that has been in operation across the USA for 21 years is finally coming to Australia this October. Salon Lane will launch its flagship site in the heart of Surry Hills, in a move that will provide a cost effective and less risky option for many of those in the industry who have been left reeling from the ongoing impacts of COVID-19.

Salon suites are individual salons that share a building, similar to a co-working space, with various studio configurations ranging from communal workspaces to private studios of differing sizes.

The launch of Salon Lane in Sydney introduces the first move-in ready, private studios and communal hair and beauty stations for professionals in the hair and beauty industry. The first Salon Lane site will open in Surry Hills, and will be the largest site of its kind in the country. Salon suites have been operating in the USA for two decades and the success of the concept, supporting small businesses and independents in the industry, is the driving force behind the entrepreneurs bringing the concept to life here. Independents account for 36% of salon professionals and this is expected to grow to 75% in the next 7 years.

With a bold national rollout plan, Salon Lane’s mission is to be the largest provider of flexible premium workspaces for professionals of the Australian hair, beauty, and wellness industries. Without the usual long term leases, fitout and overhead costs associated with standalone premises, Salon Lane is designed to empower small business owners to operate successful and financially rewarding businesses. In fact, available American data shows that professionals operating from a salon studios establishment earn 30-50% more than when working at a traditional salon. By making professional studios accessible, the salon studios concept also works to elevate the professionalism and reputation of the hair and beauty industries.

Collaborative work spaces

Salon Lane provides a move-in-ready solution that not only gives stylists, beauticians and other industry professionals complete control over their own business and profits, but also a safe space and support network that is designed to empower and assist the industries in which it operates.

Beauty and brains behind Salon Lane

Taking key learnings from their own business ventures across both the USA and Australia, the team behind Salon Lane brings with them a wealth of industry experience. The founding partners of Salon Lane include industry veteran, Co-Founder and Director Moss Kadey, who boasts 30-years’ experience in the hair industry, including as the Co-Founder of Bumble & Bumble Products LLC. He was also previously Chairman and Co-founder of Luxury Brand Partners, owners of Oribe, R+Co, IGK, Smith & Cult, and Beca.

Moss is joined by beauty industry stalwart Lance Kalish, Co-founder of one of the world’s biggest natural beauty brands, Yes To, which today has more than 28,000 stockists. Lance also co-founded and was former CEO of the Los Angeles based Beach House Group, a global beauty incubator operating five leading celebrity-influencer haircare, skincare, and cosmetic brands. Lance and Moss are joined by Jared Keen, a serial entrepreneur in the Australian property management and technology industries. Jared will take the helm as CEO.

Having spent significant time working in the industry across both the USA and Australia, Lance said of the launch of Salon Lane, “The salon studios concept has been quietly growing at a rapid pace across the USA, largely because of the level of freedom professional support it provides hair and beauty specialists, allowing them to create and run the business of their dreams. Internationally, there has been a significant shift to this model of working, and we believe that Australian hairstylists, barbers, makeup artists, beauty therapists, nail technicians, masseurs and other industry professionals are ready for that shift because it ultimately benefits them, and the industry as a whole.”

Moss echoed these sentiments, adding, “Coming from North America, I have witnessed the huge change in industry to this model. I have seen firsthand how the industry is changing and moving towards this concept.”

As the hair and beauty industries have been so heavily impacted by COVID-19, Salon Lane offers an affordable alternative to investing in a full salon or premises, and an option for those who want to safely work from somewhere other than home. The salon suites concept is considered the next big trend in the hair and beauty industry, and the new way of working for professionals in the industry – from beauticians, MUAs, wellness practitioners and cosmetic nurses.
