Ladies, it’s official! High heels are the ticket. New research has confirmed the age-old premise that high heels are the answer, the key, the timeless secret to getting exactly (well, almost exactly) what you want!
The study, conducted by the Université de Bretagne-Sud in France and released last month, has found men are more likely to be helpful to women in high heels. The research involved four experiments and signifies one of the first studies to examine how the size of a woman’s heel affects men’s attitudes.
The first experiment involved 90 men. It analysed their responses to women wearing either flat shoes or high heels when asked to complete a survey on gender equality. The results showed men were more likely to help women in high heels.
In the second experiment, involving 180 women and 180 men, four women wearing either flat shoes or high heels asked participants to complete a different survey – this time on local food habit consumption. Once again, those women in high heels were much more successful in instigating survey completion.
The third experiment assessed the helpfulness of 180 men and 180 women when a woman (either in heels or flats) dropped a glove on the street. Yep… you guessed it; heel-bearing women rarely retrieved the glove without assistance.
Finally, the fourth experiment was set in a bar. It monitored the behaviour of 26 young men toward women wearing flats and women wearing heels. As many bar-regulars could predict, the study found men were quicker to approach those ladies wearing high heels.
Interestingly, a woman’s heel height was found to have no impact on the helpfulness of other women (shoe envy maybe?).
The researchers looked into the possible reasons for the increased helpfulness seen in men. It seems the way a women’s gait changes when wearing high heels is partly to thank – the rest is down to instinct!
