While there has been a rise in body positive campaigns, a recent survey has shown that overall skin confidence is on the backburner and is still relatively low across all countries.
In celebration of Healthy Skin Month, Clairsonic recently set out to see how people from around the world truly feel about their skin.
Conducted by Harris Poll, the online survey was answered by thousands of men and women in the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, China, South Korea and Japan, with results revealing that Canada was the most skin-confident country surveyed.
While women and men appeared to have equal levels of skin confidence, the overall skin confidence was relatively low across the surveyed countries.
Healthy skin = confidence
How comfortable are you in your skin? Thirty-one percent of adults worldwide agreed that they feel more confident when their skin is clear and healthy-looking.
For China 52 percent of respondents agreed, the US with 32 percent, while Canada and the UK had 31 percent each. Germany had 29 percent of respondents in agreement, South Korea with 28 percent, France with 26 percent and Japan with 19 percent.
Confidence was measured by the people who reported they were “proud to show off their skin without anything on it.” After Canada at 28 percent, came the US with 27 percent, followed by the UK with 25 percent, Germany with 22 percent, China and France with 20 percent, South Korea with 12 percent and Japan with 10 percent.
On a global scale women and men appeared to have equal levels of skin confidence (both 20 percent), but overall skin confidence is relatively low across all of the countries surveyed.
The perfect selfie
It was found that 43 percent of adults who use social media admit to using photo editing apps and filters to improve photos of themselves before posting. The top reasons photo editing apps and filters are used include to hide blemishes, acne and/or uneven skin tone (19 percent), and to remove wrinkles or to look younger (14 percent).
The most likely counties to artificially enhance their photos are:
1. South Korea (79 percent)
2. China (65 percent)
3. Canada (29 percent)
4. The US (23 percent)
When asked to pick their top beauty wish, respondents from South Korea showed a clear preference for perfect skin (34 percent) over everything else. Adults in China (21 percent) and Japan (20 percent) placed perfect skin as second to a toned body (53 percent versus 46 percent).
