Nat of all trades
Natalie Bassingthwaighte has emerged as one of Australia’s most versatile talents: and her favourite beauty products are just as diverse.
There are certain people who are born with talent to burn. Natalie Bassingthwaighte is one of them. Her first record album with Rogue Traders went to platinum four times in Australia, and the single Voodoo Child debuted at number three on the United Kingdom charts. Alive, her first solo single, reached No 11 on the ARIA Singles Chart and is still garnering significant airtime.
After her reign as femme fatale Izzy Hoyland on Neighbours, Bassingthwaighte moved to Los Angeles to appear in films such as Prey and Attack on the Queen. She also played leads in the live production of Grease, Footloose, Chicago and Rent. And she has just finished writing a book with her sister Nicky Moore called Sistahood: A Journal of Self-Discovery. All this, and she has just started her second season of hosting So You Think You Can Dance, which was one of the highest rating shows in its first season.
Despite the frenetic life she leads, Bassingthwaighte always looks flawless.
‘I always try to eat well, drink lots of water, exercise and take rest breaks, even if they are only for five minutes,’ she says. ‘I also try to be kind to myself when I have such a busy schedule. It’s not easy and there are days when it is really hard, but I think being okay with yourself for doing the best you can is good enough.’
No matter how tired she is, Bassingthwaighte always removes her makeup and cleanses, tones and moisturises and she never forgets to apply her eye cream. She loves to try different skincare products when they come on to the market. At any time you will find a mix of both expensive products and mass-market brands in her beauty cupboard.
Bassingthwaighte’s big skincare indulgence is to take time out of her hectic schedule to spend time at a day spa and revel in some well-deserved pampering. She finds this really helps to keep her skin looking its best.
And it’s not just Bassingthwaighte’s beauty that is turning heads. With her glossy spun-gold hair, it’s no surprise Garnier asked her to be a spokesperson for the Nutrisse hair colour range. Bassingthwaighte, who already used Garnier products, was more than happy to become the face and locks of the cosmetics giant.
‘The Garnier products really nourish my hair and keep it looking shiny, no matter how busy my schedule and lifestyle,’ she says. This versatile performer is not averse to experimenting with different hairstyles – viewers got to see a new do every week on So You Think You Can Dance. She prefers a natural look, though. Bassingthwaighte’s favourite style is wearing her hair worn down in soft curls. A natural-looking colour boost by Garnier Nutrisse in Champagne completes the look.
Due to her professional commitments, Bassingthwaighte has makeup artists at her fingertips. She says they are always trying new products on her but the one they all seem to go back to is Maybelline New York Great Lash Mascara, which really gives her eyes impact.
When Bassingthwaighte is not working, her staples for everyday are mascara, lipgloss and a good moisturiser. Whether at home or on tour, she is never without her oil burner filled with ylang ylang. Its soothing and calming aroma is something she treats herself to on a daily basis. She is also very loyal to her favourite fragrance, Angel by Thierry Mugler, and never leaves home without it. No wonder she is so liked and respected by her peers – we’re happy to say that we found Natalie Bassingthwaighte to be as lovely and down to earth as she is talented and beautiful.
