As the latest Superman movie, Man of Steel, captivates audiences world wide, Superman’s power, Clark Kent’s story and Hollywood’s 3D effects will thrill viewers in bringing the classic comic to life. Yet for the styling enthusiasts among us, these elements will not quite overshadow the superhuman allure of Lois Lane’s tresses. Throughout the film, actress Amy Adams‘ hair is perfectly curled, yet suitably tussled, considering her complex relationship with Superman himself. Inspired by the movie’s launch, three blow dry bars across Australia are offering the chance for ladies to unleash their inner Lois Lane, in having her luscious locks recreated on themselves.

For a limited time, three super-hero stylists will be exclusively refashioning the Lois Lane look. Lyndsey Murphy (Potts Point), Emily Webb (Port Melbourne) and Courtney Heselden (Brisbane) know the secrets of good blow wave and can ensure those casually curled tresses become your weapon of Kryptonite. Here Lydnsey shares a step-by-step, DIY guide to creating Lois’ locks:

1. Start by washing your hair with a volumising shampoo and conditioner. Before blasting your strands with a blow dryer, apply a leave-in treatment to add moisture to the hair.
2. Starting from the back of your head, and making your way forward, divide your hair into sections. Begin by blow-drying one section at a time, clipping the rest out of the way. “Blow dry the hair up so that you’re getting volume to the root area,” Lyndsey suggests.
3. Taking a small barrel brush, dry the roots of your hair while twisting the brush in a 360 motion two or three times. Twisting the hair back to the root, leave the brush in place before grabbing another and repeating the process on a separate section of hair. “This will help set the curl, and has the same effect as a hair roller,” Lyndsey says.
4. Once you have completed fixing brushes to the bottom section of your hair, go back and remove each one to unleash a bouncy curl.
5. Repeat the same process on the top section of your hair. Once all curls are done, spray hairspray on the roots and tease the top sections of the hair to create extra volume. “If your hair wants to fall a certain way or to its natural part, tease the root area to stop it,” says Lyndsey.
6. Run your fingers through the hair to loosen the curls slightly. “If you feel it’s a little too curly, use a paddle brush to loosen the curls,” says Lyndsey. Finish by spraying the head with hair spray.

If you’re struggling to create this look on yourself, Lyndsey suggests using bobby pins or a GHD straightener to assist in mastering Lois’ locks:

Using bobby pins:

After using the small barrel brush to create the curls, use bobby pins to secure each curl before hair spraying, this will result in tighter ringlets for a more dramatic result. “Take the brush out and roll the hair back up with your fingers in the same direction. Once the curl is gathered at the root, secure it with a bobby pin before hair spraying the section.”

With a GHD:

“If anyone is getting in a panic and brushes are getting caught in their hair, they can alternatively use a GHD,” says Lyndsey. “Take the same sections, and smooth the root area with a GHD. Twist the GHD around the hair, wrap it around and hold it against the head, not too close to the scalp,” suggests Lyndsey. “Hold it there for a couple of seconds and then let it go before leaving it to set. Wait until it cools down and then you can run your fingers through it then.”

To maintain your hairstyle throughout the day or during a long event, Lyndsey suggests curling the hair tighter than your desired look in the morning, as the curls will soften during the day. “If you’re after loose curls then don’t do them straight away as they will disappear after a couple of hours.”

As for protecting your new style against the cruel winter elements, Lyndsey recommends plenty of hairspray, humidity spray and an umbrella.
