Harry Styles can do no wrong in our book. So, when he turned up to London Fashion Week with a new haircut, dubbed the ‘micro mullet’, our level of obsession with him went next level.

Anything that shifts focus from the undercut mullets we’ve seen over the past few years is a win in our books.

Harry’s shorter, edgier take on the classic 80s mullet gives off 90s soft rock vibes, with a faded bottom and a punk-inspired spiked top, styled with strong hold gel. Yep, Harry Styles is getting better by the second.

Harry Styles Micro Mullet —  The Cut

Want to get the look? We gleaned all the haircut and styling hacks you need from American Crew Educator and All-Star Lino D’Adderio, from Luigi & Sons Barbershop on the Gold Coast.

“We’ve seen a massive resurgence of the 80s mullet in recent years—everything from the modern mullet to the mullet fade, wolf cut, and even the cool shag mullet. So, it’s no surprise that we’re going to see this new version boom in popularity, especially here on the Gold Coast,” Lino explains.

“The mullet has stood the test of time because it’s a versatile look. It can be edgy or subtle, and it gives people a unique way to express their personal sense of style. The micro mullet takes this to another level by blending the retro with a contemporary and let’s be honest—Harry Styles could make anything look cool!”

This shorter variation of the mullet captures a modern aesthetic while staying true to the mullet’s traditional, iconic structure of short on top and long at the back. This makes it the perfect style for fans who want to stand out without going full 80s.

Get Harry’s Look

The key to Harry’s new look is creating volume and texture at the top while maintaining the signature faded sides and back. Lino explains that using strong hold styling products is essential to achieving that spiked, edgy appearance.

“For those with shorter hair on top, like Harry Styles, I’d recommend using American Crew Fiber. It’s one of American Crew’s original and most versatile products, specifically designed for shorter hair.”

Fiber has a resinous consistency that helps to thicken and texturise hair, providing a high hold and low shine finish. Lino explains, “The Fiber puck will give you that strong, pliable hold with a matte finish—making it perfect for the micro-mullet look. For the best results, rub a small amount evenly between your palms before working it into the hair. Distribute evenly through damp or dry hair, and style as desired, lifting in an upwards motion to maximise volume on top.”

This technique allows you to recreate the height and texture that defines Harry’s micro mullet while ensuring the look stays in place all day long.

Curly hair?

No worries! For anyone with curly hair looking to adopt the micro mullet trend (think Paul Mescal), Lino suggests a slightly different approach. “Curly hair requires a lightweight product that can help define curls without weighing the hair down. American Crew Whip is great for this,” he says. Whip offers a firm hold, natural finish, ideal for enhancing loose curls and maintaining texture and volume without feeling too heavy.

“To achieve this super-cool loose, textured mullet, work Whip into your hair from roots to ends, ensuring you form curls as you go,” advises Lino. This technique will create a soft, tousled look that feels effortless while maintaining the structured layers of the micro mullet.
