With a long line-up of music festivals coming up this summer, keeping your makeup in place throughout the day (and long into the night) is key to looking your best.
If you’re anything like me, festivals usually involve starting pre drinks a little too early, before heading off for a full day in the sun, going between stages to catch your favourite bands. Most would agree that jumping in the mosh pit and running from show to show can leave your make-up looking somewhat worse for wear. Here are our top tips to keep your face in place this festival season.
1. Prepare your skin
Sweep away dead and dulling skin cells the night before. This will leave your face smooth, silky and provide a smooth canvas that is ready for make-up application. It’s almost impossible to get make-up looking flawless on flaky, dead skin cells, so don’t expect your make-up to last very long when it’s applied to un-prepped skin.
2. Perfecting primer
If you’re not currently using primer, you should be. Or at least you will be after reading this. Primers have so many benefits and helping foundation stick around for longer is just one of them. Nor do these miracles-in-a-bottle clog your pores – rather, they help make-up to blend more evenly while smoothing the skin’s surface and evening out skin tone, they fill in fine lines and wrinkles and also reduce shine.
Another bonus is that you can buy primers that suit your specific needs, for example you might want one that includes anti-ageing or hydrating properties.
3. Complexion perfection
Indeed, the saying ‘less is more’ also comes into play when it comes to making your make-up last longer. It’s common for women to think that the more make-up they apply, the longer it will last – NO! Just no. Not only will it make your make-up disappear faster, the dry and ‘cake-face’ appearance over-applying gives your face, is not a good look.
4. Glow girl
If you’re not blessed with beautiful, Brazilian skin, join the majority of us. But, also rest assured that you can achieve a glowing complexion with a little bronzer. Make sure to find your perfect shade, you don’t want a hue that is too dark and strong. To ensure you have applied your bronzer in all the right places, dust the number ‘3’ on each side of your face. Start at the top of your forehead, dust it along temples and sweep it across your jawline. Blend the bronzer into your neck and, if you’re wearing your hair up, remember to apply to the back of your neck too.
5. Lasting lessons
Eye make-up tends to last longer when applied in light layers. For eyeliner, line your eyes with pencil, powder lightly and then reapply. Alternatively, you can just use liquid eyeliner as it often lasts longer than pencil eyeliner, as long as you can apply it straight. ‘Practice makes perfect’ needs to be your new motto when it comes to liquid liner! When it comes to mascara, opt for a waterproof option to avoid smudging. As for eyeshadow, it needs to grab to a dry surface, so make sure your eyelids are dry and beware of any unabsorbed eye cream that you may have applied earlier.
6. Longer lasting lipstick
It’s important to ensure your lips are well hydrated before applying any product. Prepare your lips with a liner, not only around the outer edge of the mouth but colour it in all over. This will help your lipstick to last much longer. If your lipstick is a natural shade, opt for a nude lip liner. You only need to use a lip liner colour that blends in with your lipstick when you’re using a darker shade.
7. Touch-ups
If you want to touch-up your make-up throughout the day, it’s important to hydrate your skin before doing so. Hydrated skin will help make-up last longer as it is less prone to be absorbed into the pores. Try a hydrating spritz that you can mist over your face before light touch-ups. Often these kinds of sprays come in small bottles that will easily fit into your handbag.
So, follow these helpful hints to ensure that your makeup lasts as long as you do this festival season!
