Miranda Kerr has them. Jennifer Garner has them. Even Harry Styles has a set of them. While there’s no denying that there’s something effortlessly adorable about the physical trait, it appears dimple lovers are turning this dream into a reality.
Dimpleplasty – a surgical procedure used to create dimples – is the latest crazy craze in plastic surgery, gaining popularity among millennials.
What are dimples?
A dimple is a small natural indentation in the flesh on a part of the human body, most notably in the cheek or on the chin.
Natural dimples on the cheeks are actually genetic defects that are caused by shortened facial muscles. Dimples are caused by a fault in the subcutaneous connective tissue that develops in course of the embryonic development. While some dimples stay through adulthood, many fade away as a child grows up and the defect disappears due to maturation of the cheek muscle.
What does dimpleplasty involve?
Dimple creation involves creating a defect (known as “the buccinator”) in the cheek area via a small incision. The muscle is then attached to the undersurface of the skin so that dimples are seen when the face is in motion, but not when the face is relaxed.
It doesn’t stop at the cheeks!
A recent study revealed that ‘Venus’ dimples (those little indents at the bottom of the spine) are considered to be one of the sexiest attributes of women. And, according to new reports, undergoing a ‘V Spot’ treatment to carve the dimples into the lower back is another growing trend.
But be warned – like any surgery, cosmetic procedures involve inherent risks and complications. (We’re still not convinced dimples are worth undergoing the knife for!)
