World Mental Health Day falls on October 10. For the first time ever, the United Nations requested a musician compose a theme song for the day. Enter, Chad Lawson, celebrated pianist and wellness expert.
Chad’s been named a UN Ambassador for the World Federation for Mental Health and selected to compose the very first theme song for World Mental Health Day, 2024. Wise choice, considering the hugely talented artist has been playing in the wellness space for over 15 years.
In fact, Chad’s entire career has been a testament to the intersection between music and wellness. He composed his albums, breathe and You Finally Knew, with the specific purpose of helping people heal through music. Little wonder, both consistently topped the Billboard Top Classical Albums chart.
Now with his new EP The Light Within which features the self-titled composition for World Mental Health Day 2024 (October 10), Chad continues his journey to help people heal through music. His approach is simple yet profound: “My role is to impact the heart rather than impress the mind.”
Chad’s music goes far beyond the melody—it offers a safe space for meditation and emotional release. Anyone seeking a moment of peace will certainly find it at his upcoming live performance at Sydney’s Neilson Pier 2/3 on October 16. It promises lush melodies, intricate harmonies, and intimate storytelling, and it will take you on a journey of emotion, contemplation and serenity.
Music for Mental Health
In a world where mental health is gaining much-needed attention, Chad’s soothing compositions have garnered over a billion streams worldwide. His ability to blend wellness with artistry has resonated with listeners globally, offering them a chance to pause and reflect.
Chad explains his personal approach to mental wellness is holistic. It includes breath work, taking time out and setting intention.
“Finding peace isn’t about escaping the chaos; it’s about creating calm within it. I like to start my day with a simple breath. Before my feet even hit the floor, I take a moment to breathe—slow, deep inhales and exhales. It sets a peaceful tone for the rest of the day.”
Enhancing Mental Health Through Music
Chad’s music encourages us to slow down and connect with ourselves.
“I think of setting an intention like tuning an instrument before a performance—it’s a small adjustment, but it can change your whole day. One of my favourite ways to set an intention is to ask myself, ‘What kind of energy do I want to bring into today?’ Sometimes it’s kindness, other times it’s focus or curiosity. You can make this intention stick by creating a simple ritual—maybe writing it down, saying it out loud while having your morning coffee, or doing a quick stretch to ground yourself in that energy.
“Another great practice is gratitude—before you even get out of bed, think of three things you’re thankful for. It’s a small habit that can set a positive tone for the day and is a perfect way to ‘close the day’ in gratitude. When we do this, we start to look for moments of gratitude throughout the day. I’m a big believer in “what you seek, you will find.” If you’re looking for hope, you’re going to find hope. And the more you focus on hope, the more it grows—until it becomes the lens through which you see the world.”
Chad carries this intention with him throughout the day.
“I build in little pauses—what I call ‘Breath Brakes’, he explains. “These moments help me reset, refocus, and stay present. When things get stressful, whether at work or with family and friends, taking that pause helps me respond calmly instead of reacting.
“For me, peace is about finding those intentional moments—whether it’s through breath, music, or something else that brings you back to yourself. And that’s different for everyone. It could be reading a book, savouring a cup of coffee, or even volunteering. But recognising that we all need these breath breaks is key—they anchor us during the chaos. Make space for those moments, and you’ll find your peace.”
A Moment of Peace in Sydney
In his upcoming live performance, Chad will be sharing tracks from his album Where We Are, which was born out of messages from fans about how his music has touched their lives. It’s not just about the notes he plays but the emotional journeys he invites his audience to take alongside him. “I’m putting my hands out and saying, ‘I’ll hold you through this,’” he says.
Beyond his music, Chad is well known for his reflections on the everyday struggles we all face. His iHeart Radio Award-nominated podcast Calm It Down dives into mental health topics for all ages, and offers meditative techniques with a soundscape set by Chad himself. With over five million downloads and accolades such as a 2024 Webby Award honour, there’s no denying that Chad’s work resonates with those looking to enhance their mental wellness.
“For me, peace is about finding those intentional moments—whether it’s through breath, music, or something else that brings you back to yourself,” he shares. His music, much like his meditations, is an invitation to pause and breathe amidst the busyness of life.
A Musical Journey Grounded in Wellness—and plenty of sweets!
As he embarks on his Australian tour, Chad’s excitement extends beyond music. A self-confessed lover of sweets and coffee, Chad can’t wait to explore Australia’s culinary delights. “I’m a sucker for a good pastry, he laughs. “My wife was once a professional baker and still bakes just for the love of it. We’re a great match!
“I’ve heard amazing things about LUNE Croissanterie in Melbourne—it sounds like they’ve perfected the croissant game! I’m also excited to explore more while I’m there. As for my favourite treats back home, I’m all about finding whatever’s local and amazing. I live in Savannah, GA, and there’s a spot called Auspicious Bakery that has the greatest almond croissant. I’d put it up against any place in the world! The other day in London, I came across an Eccles [traditional English pastry], and my mind was blown. Best pain au chocolat? Zurich, hands down. I love when bakeries get creative and go outside the box, but sometimes you just need a good old classic.
“Oh, and I’m a devoted coffee lover too, so I can’t wait to dive into Australia’s coffee scene—I’ve heard you’ve perfected it! So while some people think I tour just to play music, it’s actually to feed my massive sweet tooth and coffee addiction. Australia, whatcha got!?”
