Oscars 2024 has come and gone. The red carpet glamour, Ryan Gosling singing I’m Just Ken and a naked John Cena, had us enjoying every second.
But the Oscar-winning hairstyles seen on guys was what really turned our heads. In particular, Robert Downey Junior and Matthew McConaughey.
Celeb stylists, Davy Newkirk and Marcus Francis, created the laid-back looks for these two actors. Here’s how they did it.
Robert Downey Junior’s Oscar-winning hair
Robert didn’t just take home the gong for Best Supporting Actor in Oppenheimer, he wowed us with his perfectly-styled coif.
Davy Newkirk took inspiration from Classic Hollywood.

Look Breakdown
- To begin, I sprayed Prep and Prime Tonic evenly onto Robert’s damp hair. Next, I combed through the hair to ensure a good base for the following products.
- I warmed a nickel-sized amount of Fiber Cream in my hands, and applied it from root to the end. I added a head massage at the end of the application to make sure it’s really in there. The texturising formula was perfect for this, given its medium hold and silky matte finish.
- Next, I used a blow dryer on medium heat to rough-dry his hair. 6I smoothed out some of the curls with a small, round brush, directed the sides back, and gave the top of his hair some volume.
- Then, using a small flat iron, I created more detail work by giving some pieces of hair a cool bend.
- Lastly, I finished the hair with a small amount of Matte Clay, which added dimension and provided extra hold.
Matthew McConaughey’s Oscar-winning hair
He may have missed a mention on the Awards list, but Matthew McConaughey was a winner in the hair stakes, as far as we’re concerned. Marcus Francis paid homage to the cool, laid-back American movie star image McConaughey has perfected. “He embraces his iconic wavy hair, proving it has that masculine, leading man look. I wanted to maintain the classic shape but also bring modern texture to his waves.”

Look Breakdown
- I began with Prep and Prime Tonic on towel-dried hair. This prepared the hair for styling and increased control and manageability.
- Next, I used a small amount of Light Hold Styling Gel on the sides, combing it back loosely into the hair. Then I used a before using a diffuser to dry it into place.
- Fiber Cream, applied to the sides and back, gave his hair a refined texture.
- For the top, I used Cream Pomade. This moisture-rich cream-pomade provides a natural look while taming hair and leaving a low-shine finish.
- To finish, I lightly moved the hair around to soften the look, ensuring it moved back and over the ears.
