With Autumn officially here, we’re here to share some hair colour trends that experts say we will all be asking for when the cold weather rolls around.

Steph Bacelic from one of Melbourne’s favourite salons, Beatnik Studio sees it all when it comes to the colour trends that are expected to fill our feeds (and streets) for the months ahead. She says a change in the weather often leads to more of us booking a colour consultation as we try to match our look with the season. This year is likely to see plenty of deep, rich colours for winter and autumn, in particular different shades of red fueled by Dua Lipa’s cherry cola hair.

Steph shares the trending colours and how to achieve them, whether you are heading to your salon or trying it at home these are the tips and tricks to nail the seasonal shift.

Buttercream Blonde

For those looking to stay light throughout the cooler season, Steph says buttercream blonde is the answer, providing a rich, creamy colour to approach autumn with. She says it is a more muted version of a summer blonde and is a great way to enhance the rosiness of your cheeks during the cold weather.

Blondes should be able to achieve this look in one sitting depending on the health and integrity of the hair. Steph recommends asking your stylist for a full highlight, and a slight root shadow to create a soft regrowth and enhance the bright pops of colour through the ends. Toning it with natural beige and warm tones will always appear lighter and creamier to the naked eye.

If you are looking for an at-home solution, Steph loves Revlon Professional’s answer to semi-permanent hair colour. Choose between the Nutri Color Filter 1003 Pale Gold or the Nutri Color Filter 931 for a slightly cooler beige tone depending on the level of buttercream blonde you are looking for. Apply the treatment for 3 minutes for a colour refresh and up to 15 minutes for those looking for a deeper tone.

Cherry Cola

Dua Lipa has brought back this fun hair colour and what better time to try it than autumn? Steph says this colour is all about nailing a chocolatey-brown base and applying reddish-burgundy overtones, with plenty of gloss and shine.

For those with dark hair already, Steph says a red colour glaze should be applied to add a warm tone to your hair, or, if you are starting from scratch, then she says to ask for a deep brown colour with lots of red mixed in to achieve this cherry-cola hue.

If you aren’t ready to go all in with the red trend, Steph says those with a brunette base should try their hand with a combination of the Revlon Professional Nutri Color Filter 500 and 642. This allows you to rock the colour for the season whilst keeping your locks healthy, leaving it on for up to 15 minutes depending on how deep you want to go with the colour. For those looking to change from light to a darker colour like this, Steph says you should schedule a consultation with your colourist to chat about your options and what will work best for you.

Mushroom Brown

As we head into the cooler months, mushroom brown hair could be the season’s answer to a natural yet distinctive colour that can work on all hair types. Steph says mushroom brown is a versatile colour that is a great way to enhance your natural colour rather than completely changing it.

To achieve this cool-toned shade, Steph recommends creating a neutral toned brown base with some subtle highlights blended through the hair. Since it is such as low-maintenance colour, Steph says the Revlon Professional Nutri Color Filter 821 Silver Beige is a great treatment to upkeep the mushroom blonde tones at home. For those after a darker cool brown, apply the new Revlon Professional Nutri Color Filter 512 Ash Brown to keep the warmth at bay, which will still hydrate and nourish your hair – particularly important in the winter.

Cowboy Copper

If the red trend is anything to go by, cowboy copper is here to stay with a greater emphasis on brown undertones to be seen throughout 2024. Steph describes this colour as the perfect blend of brown and copper, more so in the brunette family while embracing tones of gold and copper. It is a great way to enter the red category without going all in.

For a permanent vibrant colour, Steph would use the Revlon Professional Colorsmetique Intense Copper 66.40 . An innovative professional colour treatment, the Colorsmetique Intense Copper will not only leave your hair looking on trend but will also moisturise, protect and make your hair shine.

Or have a go at home and apply the Revlon Professional Nutri Color Filter 740 Light Copper to brunette hair. The pigmented treatment is customisable and offers intense colour with the bonus of it feeling extremely nourished and hydrated

Expensive Brunette

Thanks to the ‘quiet luxury’ trend, the expensive brunette is going nowhere in 2024 – a colour all about a rich brown with plenty of shine. To pull off this trend, keeping your hair in good condition is necessary, and Steph recommends investing in an effective hair care regime to ensure the colour gives its best. Her pick is the Revlon professional RE/START Colour range, consisting of a shampoo, conditioner and mask, these products will help protect your new colour and provide the extra nourishment it needs in the dry, winter months.

To get this look, Steph recommends asking your stylist for a rich brunette with depth finished with an all-over gloss on top. This look doesn’t require too much upkeep but can be boosted by a salon visit every 2-3 months with a toner using the Revlon Color Excel Gloss to ensure it stays just as luxe as it was to begin with.

Or if you are hoping to skip the salon this year, then Steph says to apply the Revlon Professional Nutri Colour Filters 524 Coppery Pearl Brown or the Nutri Colour Filters 613 Golden Ash Brown for a home colour treatment that provides intense colour, care and shine. For this look, leave the product in for up to 15 minutes for a deeper tone.
