So you’re in your twenty-somethings and you’re truckin’ along pretty well in skincare land. You may have occasional breakouts, a couple of fine lines, but nothing too extreme. You may be in your ‘glory days’ right now, but there are a few things you should make sure you’re doing to keep your skin in good nick.
If you don’t start caring for it now, it could be all downhill from here (pls don’t freak out). Remember, it’s never too early to start learning how to take care of your skin. If you have a good skincare regimen from an early age and keep it healthy, you will be ageless. So take our advice and give your skin a little TLC!
Don’t sleep with your makeup on
It’s the golden rule, but I bet we’re all guilty of it. Coming home tipsy and passing out without taking your makeup off, or just falling asleep after an exhausting day at work – we’ve all done it. However, if you don’t cleanse your face before bed, dirt and dead skin cells are not removed. This leaves you victim to the clogging of pores and can lead to chronic inflammation in the form of your arch nemesis, pimples. Your complexion will appear dull, your skin will look older and if you have acne, you might make it worse. Not to mention an overwhelming feeling of yuck.
Wear SPF every. Single. Day.
Do it. Good genes or not, if you don’t protect your skin from the sun it will have a whole lot of bad repercussions down the line. Instead of risking skin cancer and accelerating the ageing process (hello wrinkles), protect your skin by not exposing it to excessive sun exposure.
A tan may look good now when you’re in your twenties, but the sun will eventually rob you of your youthful skin in the future. Sooo not worth it. Keep in mind that the sun you get from daily activities in your 20s will affect your skin for years to come. If you want flawless skin well into old age, you’ll want to take this advice.
Make sure your skincare routine is on point
Skincare doesn’t have to be crazy confusing – keep it simple. An effective routine every morning and night with ensure your skin is healthy and happy. Step 1: Cleanse. Step 2: Treat – e.g. antioxidant in the morning and retinol at night. Step 3: Protect – get into the SPF in the morning and switch to a basic moisturiser at night. In addition, you should exfoliate at least twice a week. If you have a really mild exfoliator or exfoliating pads, you can add this into your routine every day.
Don’t apply makeup without applying moisturiser
Sure you’re saving a couple of minutes in the morning, but applying makeup directly to the skin without moisturiser is a negative. Makeup is not designed to be absorbed by the skin, but rather to sit on the surface of the skin. Not only will your makeup look uneven, but it will clog your pores and cause unwanted breakouts.
Take your makeup off before exercise.
You’ve rushed to the gym straight from work with a full face of makeup on. You might skip the face swipe and go straight into your workout, but leaving your makeup on while you exercise is a definite don’t. As your skin releases toxins during exercise, your pores need to be able to breathe to avoid infection. Pack some makeup remover wipes in your bag and avoid the hassles down the line.
Skin and diet are besties
Your skincare doesn’t just stop at SPF and moisturiser. Ohhhh no. It all starts from the inside out – what you eat and drink goes hand in hand with the health and appearance of your skin. So, the better you eat, the better your skin will look. Switch up those afternoon coffees for green juices. Not only will your skin appear more radiant and glowing, but you’ll feel good too!
