We’ve all heard the term Superfood, faming the types of food that are nutritionally dense with much-needed vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, whilst protecting our bodies from cell damage and helping to prevent disease. But what about nourishment for our body’s largest organ, our skin? Enter, Superbeauty.

Taking inspiration from its equally important counterpart Superfood, Superbeauty is also nutritionally dense, but for your face. It’s a collective of hard-working active ingredients that provide your skin with the ultimate nourishment, whilst protecting, reviving and rejuvenating skin cells. Superbeauty focusses on a product’s performance on the skin and not the aesthetics of the packaging, smell or the marketing hype. Superbeauty breaks it down to what is actually going to work.

Unfortunately, a lot of skincare products found on the market today only contain around 2% Active ingredients. Superbeauty is here to change all that. Referring to products that contain nutritionally dense ingredients, Superbeauty offers skin cell regeneration, in potent form. Ross Macdougald, Founder of Biologi explains.

“Skincare products are made up using an array of Active and Inactive ingredients to create the overall look and feel of the product. The Active ingredient is the thing that is actually beneficial for the skin, changing it on a cellular matrix level. However, when we look at most skincare products, they are likely to contain a couple of active ingredients in low percentages, formulated with some filler ingredients like water and emulsifiers. The filler ingredients have no benefit to the skin yet are put in there for various reasons such as to create the right texture, to bind ingredients together or in many cases, for cost purposes. The same goes for fatty acids, fatty alcohols, preservatives, fragrances – none of these give any benefits to the skin and they’re just there to create the cream itself.”

“Superbeauty on the other hand refers to those products that are nutritionally dense of proven active ingredients. The closer to 100% activity the better for your skin, meaning the product has a higher chance of showing a dramatic improvement to the skin over a shorter time period.”

Superbeauty also focusses on just how a product is made, and whether the ingredients are still stable when they reach the skin. Cosmetic processes often mean certain ingredients can cancel each other out, and whilst the label might state that the ingredients are in the product, the presence of other counteracting ingredients means they can cancel each other out. Because the skincare industry in Australia doesn’t require testing of the final product in terms of whether the ingredients are still active, it can mean in essence you’re buying a product full of ingredients that don’t actually work on the skin.

“When we look at how skincare products are made, we need to understand that there are so many ingredients that go into the product that serve a specific purpose (and that’s not always to make your skin nicer). A lot of the time brands need to put in emulsifiers which bind things together like oil and water to make sure they don’t break down or separate. But the issue is, when you put active ingredients in there, it also binds them in too. So this means that they can’t get to the skin to be absorbed and they get left on the surface of the skin along with the emulsifiers.”

“The other problem with these type of filler ingredients is that you’re putting products on your skin that contain fragrances, preservatives, and synthetic emulsifiers, and they all have the potential to sensitise your skin. Over time you can get redness, itchiness and acne, all due to putting synthetics on your skin. So the reason Superbeauty products are so beneficial is because you’re taking away the majority of filler ingredients, focussing on high percentages of active ingredient that are actually beneficial to the skin.”

Sounds like Superbeauty is the future of skincare, so what do we need to look for when searching for these products?

“Look for products that only contain nutritionally dense ingredients, ideally with none or only minimal filler ingredients. You’ll want to search for products that have active ingredients that create most of or all of the product or better yet, look for Biologi which contains 100% Active plant-based extracts. That means 100% of the ingredient is Active, so 100% of ingredients that work and nothing that doesn’t. The best bit is that Biologi is 100% natural – just pure plant extracts that deliver 100% nutrients, changing the skin on a cellular matrix level and delivering the Superbeauty that your skin needs.”
