We sent 12 men, who had a variety of skincare concerns, out to research and trial a variety of skincare treatments. The top four treatments were chosen by the men themselves. Here are their picks.

Gernetics facial

Glenn, aged 29, is a pilot for Qantas and his skin is dry and dehydrated from all that flying. No matter how much water he drinks and creams he applies, he says his skin remains very dry.

Glenn had a Gernetics facial. The whole treatment lasted for one and a half hours and the facial was accompanied by a hand and arm massage.

‘It was really relaxing,’ says Glenn. ‘The products used made my skin feel calm and cool; the skin around my eyes felt a little tingly after the eye mask. Overall, my skin definitely felt alive and rehydrated after the facial.’

Some of the products used included Ger-Peel, Immuno Mask, Hydra Men and Ger-Oxy all by Gernetics.

Anti-wrinkle injections

Steve, aged 33, is an advertising executive who has quite deep frown lines on his forehead and crow’s feet around his eyes. He went along to see plastic surgeon Dr Steven Liew from Shape Clinic in Darlinghurst, Sydney.

Dr Liew assessed Steve’s skincare concerns and suggested Botox injections to smooth his forehead creases and wrinkles around his eyes.

Steve was very adamant that he didn’t want to lose any of his facial expressions and was also concerned the result would not look natural. He wanted the result to be subtle and more of a preventative measure to stop deeper wrinkles in their tracks.

Dr Liew made little dots with a marking pen to show Steve where he would inject and then proceeded to inject the muscle relaxant in tiny doses. ‘In a flash it was all over,’ says Steve. ‘And I didn’t experience any pain at all.’

Dr Liew instructed him to crease his brow and make an exaggerated smile every hour for the rest of the day to aid in the absorption of the Botox. Steve is very happy with the result. He looks naturally younger and well rested.

Omnilux light treatment and Priori peel

Bill, aged 50, is a publishing executive who realised that all those years of swimming, surfing, sailing and skiing had taken a toll on his skin.

He had patches of pigmentation and was really quite lined in some areas, with a different coloured skin appearing as his hairline receded. He was especially concerned with this unflattering two-tone effect.

Bill decided to try a combination of Omnilux LED light treatment, Priori skin peels and a change of products. His programme consisted of weekly Priori LCA peels, twice-weekly Omnilux Revive treatments alternating with the Omnilux Plus, supported by a regime of at-home products. After three weeks Bill was changed to the Priori Forte 50, a stronger peel for the last three peels.

‘At the completion of six weeks, the results were amazing,’ he says. ‘My two-toned forehead was a single, healthy, luminous-looking skin colour. The pigmentation on my cheeks had completely disappeared and there was also a noticeable reduction in wrinkles, especially the crow’s feet around my eyes.’

Some of the products Bill used at home included True Solutions Total Age Protector SPF 30, Priori LCA Cleanser, Priori Idebenone Smooth Lines and Idebenone Facial Moisturizing Cream.

Minivac Microhymens-skindrabrasion

Mark, aged 56, the owner of a large accessory label, has oily skin with enlarged pores and areas of dry patches. He travels frequently and found that his skin had developed more patchy areas and larger pores following long periods of travel.

He thought microdermabrasion treatments might improve the appearance of his skin. His choice of treatment was the Minivac Microhydrabrasion system, distributed by Clinic Care.

This treatment is a two-part process. Part one is microdermabrasion using a diamond tip, followed by microhydrabrasion. Microhydrabrasion still uses the microdermabrasion with diamond tip action but at the same time water also flushes through the tip, deep cleansing the pores of the skin. This process not only cleans the skin but it also soothes and hydrates. You can actually see all the debris coming out into the canister as the microhydrabrasion is being performed.

DermaQuest Advanced B5 Serum and Collagen Activating Complex were applied immediately following each treatment.

Mark had weekly treatments for four weeks. ‘Even after the first treatment my skin looked so much better and my pores appeared smaller,’ he says. ‘By the end of the four weeks I felt that I’d been given new skin – such was the difference in its appearance. I certainly looked years younger.’ Mark’s Minivac Microhydrabrasion treatments were supported by at-home use of DermaQuest Cleanser, Daily Protective Moisturiser SPF 15 and Antioxidant Serum.
