Some makeup ‘rules’ you just can’t believe and some of them just don’t make sense. So Sarah Tammer, Makeup Ambassador for LUMA Beauty, busts some myths for us.

Myth 1: You can use hairspray to set your makeup

It may, but I would never try this! Lots of hairsprays are toxic and designed for hair, not skin. I imagine it would feel sticky and tacky on your skin.

I once had a client who told me that another makeup artist had set her makeup with spray on fake tan and she wanted me to do this as well … I absolutely refused!

There really is no need to use hairspray to set your makeup, as there are so many brilliant setting sprays on the market!

Myth 2: Your under-eye concealer should match your foundation

This is really case by case depending on the individual and what works for them.

Some people need lighter concealer to counteract dark areas and some don’t. Each face is unique and requires different products and techniques. I don’t use concealer under my eyes as I’m blessed not to have dark circles, but I have some fine lines and sometimes have puffiness. Because of this, I find that concealer makes my under eyes look worse, so I go concealer free.

Myth 3: Expensive brands work better

This is not necessarily true. There are MANY affordable brands that are FANTASTIC! LUMA Beauty is the perfect example of a makeup brand that is high quality at an excellent and very affordable price point. Don’t get me wrong, I do love some luxury products, but I also want to know that the ingredients are clean, green, good for me, my clients and the environment.

Myth 4: Cosmetic products don’t expire or go ‘off’

They do! They have a little symbol on them that indicates how long you should use them for after opening.

Myth 5: Moisturiser can replace primer

There are SO many products on the market in this space. Some brands have separate moisturisers and primers, and other brands have both in one like LUMA’s Base Perfecting Priming Moisturiser. Whichever option you choose, this is really an individual choice and you can go with what feels and looks good, whether that be moisturiser alone, primer alone or both in one!
