The beginner’s guide to essential oils

Essential oils can have a transformative effect on both mind and body, supporting focus, relaxation and skin nourishment.

Essential oils have long been valued for their ability to influence both body and mind. From supporting focus and relaxation to enhancing skincare rituals, these highly concentrated plant extracts continue to play a role in modern beauty and wellbeing routines.

Pure essential oils are derived from aromatic plants and prized for their potency. Each oil has its own unique profile, with properties that may be calming, invigorating or clarifying, depending on the plant source. They can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, including diffusion, massage, bathing and topical application when properly diluted.

Aromatherapy refers to the practice of using essential oils to support emotional wellbeing and sensory experiences. While research into essential oils is ongoing, their popularity endures due to their ability to complement self-care rituals, enhance mood and elevate everyday beauty routines. Essential oils can also be incorporated into skincare to support skin hydration, elasticity and overall appearance, as well as improve the appearance of acne. What’s more, evidence suggests essential oils may even improve sleep patterns and lower feelings of anxiety.

Essential oils through the ages

The use of aromatic plants dates back thousands of years, with records showing essential oils and botanical extracts being used in ancient Egypt, China, Greece and Rome. These cultures incorporated aromatic essences into cosmetics, massage, bathing rituals and ceremonial practices.

Ancient Chinese texts reference plant infusions as early as 2700 BC, while Egyptian papyri from around 1555 BC document the use of aromatic substances in medicinal and cosmetic preparations. Over time, these early practices laid the foundations for modern aromatherapy and botanical skincare.

The power of scent

Our sense of smell plays a significant role in how we experience the world. Scent is closely linked to areas of the brain associated with memory, emotion and mood, which helps explain why certain aromas can feel calming, energising or comforting.

Research has shown that scent can influence emotional responses and perceived wellbeing, which is why essential oils are often used to support relaxation, focus or a sense of balance. In a beauty context, fragrance also enhances the sensory appeal of skincare and body products, turning routine moments into rituals.

‘There’s no denying the power of scent on both mind and body,’ says aromatherapy specialist and author Pat Princi-Jones. ‘Many people are turning to essential oils as part of their self-care routines. Whether you want to nourish your skin, reduce anxiety, decongest or detox after the festive season, essential oils might just be your answer.

‘Citrus oils in particular work wonders on cleansing and purifying the body. Oils such as grapefruit, bergamot and mandarin provide an effective synergy to use alongside a well-balanced detoxification program that includes regular exercise, health diet and plenty of water.’

Where to begin

If you’re new to essential oils, Princi-Jones recommends starting with a small, versatile collection. Citrus oils like grapefruit and mandarin offer bright, refreshing aromas, while bergamot brings a softer, more balancing note, she says.

These oils can be diffused individually or blended together, added to body oils or incorporated into simple at-home rituals. When used in massage, they can enhance the sensory experience while leaving skin lightly scented and nourished.

For those seeking convenience, pre-blended essential oil mixes are widely available and designed for easy use in diffusers or home rituals, offering a simple way to explore aromatherapy without needing to blend oils yourself.

Using essential oils safely

Despite being plant-derived, essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be used with care. Most essential oils must be diluted in a carrier oil such as jojoba, sweet almond or grapeseed oil before being applied to the skin.

Always read labels carefully and perform a patch test before topical use, especially if you have sensitive skin. Certain citrus oils may increase skin sensitivity to sunlight, so it’s best to avoid sun exposure after application.

How essential oils are extracted

Essential oils are obtained from various parts of plants, including flowers, leaves, peels and roots, using several extraction methods.

Cold expression is commonly used for citrus peels, while steam distillation remains one of the most widely used techniques for extracting oils from herbs and flowers. Other methods, such as solvent extraction, are reserved for more delicate botanicals.

These processes are designed to preserve the aromatic compounds that give each oil its distinctive scent and character.
