‘Ultra-luxury’ cruise holidays allow travellers to combine multiple exotic destinations and individually tailored adventures with the convenience of unpacking just once, all while enjoying world-class dining and personal butler services.

Around the globe, cruise holidays continue to surge in popularity by offering travellers an increasingly convenient blend of safe adventure, easy-to-access relaxation and guaranteed end-of-day comfort.

The appeal of cruising itself lies in its ability to combine multiple destinations with the convenience of unpacking just once, all while enjoying world-class amenities and services.

Among the various options available, ‘ultra-luxury’ cruise lines such as Seabourn, Silversea, Uniworld, Scenic, Regent, Ritz-Carlton and SeaDream have set themselves apart – providing an unparalleled experience that goes beyond the offerings of standard luxury cruises.

And as increasing numbers of travellers seek unique and enriching experiences, the allure of ultra-luxury cruises – whether exploring the serene rivers of Europe or vast oceans around the globe – continues to grow.

Cruise holiday benefits

There are several compelling reasons cruise holidays have become an increasingly preferred choice for many travellers.

Ease of travel: Cruises eliminate the hassle of constant packing and unpacking. Travellers can explore multiple destinations without the stress of navigating airports or long-distance transfers, as their floating hotel moves with them.

Price value: Cruises offer exceptional value by bundling accommodation, meals, entertainment and transportation into one package. This ‘all-inclusive’ approach often proves economically attractive, compared with traditional holidays where each component is paid for separately.

Diverse offerings: There are cruise offerings for everyone: catering to families, seniors, adventure-seekers and relaxation enthusiasts. Cruise lines specifically tailor their offerings to suit various demographics, aiming to provide a memorable experience for all.

Exceptional service: Cruise ship staff are trained – and renowned – for their warm hospitality and exceptional service, creating a welcoming environment designed to ensure guests feel like they’re comfortably and securely ensconced in a ‘home-away-from-home’.

Social opportunities: Cruises provide easy-to-access social environments, where passengers can connect with like-minded individuals, foster new friendships and share their daily experiences.

The ‘ultra-luxury’ difference

While luxury cruises offer a high standard of service and amenities, ‘ultra-luxury’ cruise lines take this aspiration to the next level.

The particular benefits of choosing an ultra-luxury cruise line include:

Personalised service: Ultra- luxury cruise lines like Seabourn, Silversea, Uniworld, Scenic, Regent, Ritz-Carlton and SeaDream prioritise personalised service. With a higher staff-to-guest ratio, passengers receive around-the-clock attentive and tailored service throughout their journey. For instance, Silversea offers butler service for every suite, ensuring their guests’ needs are met with the utmost in personal care and attention; similarly Scenic’s river cruises include butler service for all guests.

Exclusive itineraries & experiences: Ultra-luxury cruise lines offer exclusive itineraries that often include lesser-known ports and unique shore excursions. For example, Uniworld’s boutique river cruises provide immersive cultural experiences, visiting smaller villages and towns that larger ships cannot access. Most importantly, all the ‘ultra-luxury’ companies will go out of their way to ensure each individual guest’s personal priorities are included and satisfied upon request.

All-inclusive price: One of the defining features of ‘ultra-luxury’ cruises is their all-inclusive nature. This means almost everything is covered in the fare – including gourmet dining, premium beverages, shore excursions, gratuities and sometimes even airline flights and land-transport transfers. This all-inclusive approach allows guests to enjoy their holiday without worrying about additional costs.

Luxurious accommodation: Accommodations on ultra-luxury cruises are designed with opulence and extreme comfort as priorities. Spacious suites, often with private balconies, are standard.

Fine dining: Gourmet dining is a standard hallmark of ultra-luxury cruises. These lines offer multiple dining venues with world-class cuisine, often created by renowned chefs. Specialty dining options are typically included in the fare, allowing guests to indulge in exquisite, personally requested meals without additional charges.

All-inclusive vs non all-inclusive

When comparing all-inclusive cruises to non all-inclusive options, it’s essential to consider the total value of services provided.

All-inclusive cruises, while typically priced higher upfront, often prove to be more economical when factoring in the total cost of meals, drinks, gratuities and excursions.

For example, a 7-night all-inclusive river cruise with Scenic might cost around US$4,000 per person but includes all meals, drinks, excursions and gratuities.

In comparison, on non all-inclusive cruises the standard inclusions will usually only cover basic accommodation and meals, with significant potential additional costs for beverages, specialty dining, gratuities, excursions and other amenities.

For example, a 7-night non all-inclusive ocean cruise might have a base fare of US$1,500 per person; however, additional expenses for drinks, specialty dining, excursions and gratuities could easily add US$1,000 or more to the total cost.

Hence while the upfront cost of an ‘all-inclusive’ cruise may be higher, the comprehensive inclusions often make it a more economic and stress-free option.

Seabourn cruise line

Seabourn is an ultra-luxury small ship operator headquartered in Seattle (on the US west coast) owned by Carnival Corporation.

Seabourn operates 7 small vessels and offers ‘all-inclusive, ultra-luxury cruising refined to its purest form, where hand-selected itineraries take you to places beyond the reach of larger ships’.

The company trumpets ‘intimate ships with a private yacht-like atmosphere masterfully designed by iconic hospitality atelier Tihany Design’; ‘intuitive, personalised service provided by a team passionate about exceeding guests expectations’; complimentary caviar as ‘an extra indulgence offered throughout your voyage’; world-class dining and culinary experiences that ‘rival the finest restaurants anywhere’ and guests dine ‘where, when and with whom you wish’; and curated voyages to all seven continents.

Some cruises might fall in the US$4,000-7,000 range, while others can be much higher, such as a 43-day cruise to the Americas and Antarctica for as much as US$22,999 per person.

Its 7 vessels include Seabourn Ovation, Seabourn Encore, Seabourn Quest, Seabourn Sojourn and Seabourn Odyssey, plus purpose-built expedition ships Seabourn Pursuit and Seabourn Venture.

Seabourn’s all-inclusive Expedition Difference offers: ultra-luxury, purpose-built expedition ships (Seabourn Pursuit and Seabourn Venture) with PC6 ice-strengthened hull and advanced manoeuvring technology for superior stability, safety and comfort; a world- class 24-person Expedition Team ‘delivering immersive experiences and guiding you throughout your entire journey’; inclusive experiences at every stop, such as curated shore excursions, cultural tours, guided zodiac cruises, hikes, nature walks and snorkelling; optional, guided ‘Expedition Experiences’ including state-of-the-art custom-built 6-guest submarines, providing the option ‘to extend your expedition further for greater ocean exploration, kayaks and other destination experiences’; and ‘hand-crafted itineraries designed to take the luxury

traveller further, deeper and closer to the most coveted and remote destinations in the world’.

Silversea cruises

Silversea’s fleet of 12 small ultra- luxury ships – 8 ‘ocean’ and 4 ‘expedition’ vessels – sail to more than 900 destinations on all 7 continents and are ‘designed for those who delight in discovery and indulge in luxury’.

The ships range in size from 51 to 364 suites ‘to ensure each of our guests finds the perfect balance between choice and intimacy’; plus Silversea’s all-inclusive cruises offer around-the-clock butler service in all suites with ‘our white- gloved ambience’.

Each of the 8 ‘cruising’ ships– Ocean Dawn, Ocean Moon, Ocean Muse, Ocean Nova, Ocean Ray, Ocean Shadow, Ocean Spirit and Ocean Whisper – has been designed and built (inside and out) for elegant and luxurious journeys, including the latest technologies.

The 4 ‘expedition’ vessels – Expedition Cloud, Expedition Endeavour, Expedition Origin and Expedition Wind – are specifically design as ‘platforms for adventurous, expedition travel’, combining cutting-edge exploration features and capabilities.

Patrons completing their first Silversea voyage are also offered membership to its Venetian Society Programme, which it describes as a special circle of friends experiencing exclusive privileges and prestigious cruise rewards.

Uniworld boutique river cruises

Uniworld – branding itself as ‘the world’s best and most awarded luxury river cruise line’ – offers itineraries in spectacular destinations throughout Europe, Egypt, Asia and Peru.

Its fleet includes 12 ultra-luxury ships with an average capacity of 120 guests (one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios in the river cruise industry) and features ‘enticing shore excursions, world-class gourmet cuisine, impeccable hospitality, and the highest degree of all-inclusive benefits on the rivers’.

Uniworld’s mantra is simple: ‘Adore every guest and strive for excellence down to the smallest detail. At Uniworld we only deliver the best, because you deserve the best.’

The guiding visionary behind this boutique philosophy was Beatrice ‘Bea’ Tollman, founder of Red Carnation Hotels, named Hotelier of the Year at the 2012 European Hospitality Awards in 2012 and inducted into The British Travel & Hospitality Hall of Fame in 2019. Bea and her creative team ‘amplify the definition of boutique luxury with every new and updated company-designed ship’.

Uniworld’s river cruises allow guests to travel from one exciting destination to the next aboard a stylish floating hotel with chic lounges, panoramic restaurants, sumptuous cuisine, exquisite antiques, original art and luxurious river-view staterooms and suites.

The European fleet (sailing France, Italy, Portugal and central Europe) includes River Duchess, River Princess, River Queen, SS Antoinette, SS Beatrice, SS Bon Voyage, SS Catherine, SS Elisabeth, SS Joie de Vivre, SS La Venezia, SS Maria Theresa, SS Sao Gabriel and SS Victoria.

After their first Uniworld cruise, patrons are automatically enrolled in the River Heritage Club loyalty program and begin receiving benefits, savings and rewards reserved exclusively for loyal guests.

Scenic luxury cruises

Established in 1986, Scenic is a proudly Australian-founded company ‘taking our guests to the most fascinating destinations in over 60 countries and every continent’.

Since 2008 Scenic has set a benchmark in all-inclusive, ultra-luxury 5-star river cruises in Europe and Southeast Asia; in addition, in 2019 it introduced Scenic Eclipse, the ‘World’s First Discovery Yacht’ – a 228-guest ultra-luxury ship – and in 2023 a second yacht Scenic Eclipse II taking guests to all four corners of the globe.

Marketed as ‘where ultra-luxury meets discovery’, the Scenic Eclipse sets the benchmark in 6-star ocean cruising, combining innovative design and state-of-the-art technology; the company boasts ‘it’s more than an ultra-luxury voyage – it’s immersive, all-inclusive exploration and once-in-a-lifetime experiences’.

With two Discovery Yachts, Scenic offers cruises to 350 ports, through 49 countries and all 7 continents – exploring the Polar Regions, Australia and the South Pacific, Europe and the Mediterranean, the Americas and Asia. The 2 Eclipse vessels have been designed to delight both the keen explorer and elegant traveller, including opportunities to soar above the horizon in one of two helicopters, and delve below the water in submersibles.

Meanwhile Scenic’s river cruises target ‘extraordinary regions, while immersing you in the rich history, local cultures, and culinary delicacies to create moments that will be cherished for years to come’ – from the historic waterways of Europe to the mighty Mekong River in Southeast Asia.

Scenic’s sleek, ultra-luxury Space- Ships carry only 163 guests and are designed to navigate Europe’s rivers with ease, while offering unrivalled amenities and an abundance of spaces to relax: sailing on the Rhine, Main, Danube and Moselle Rivers are Scenic Jasper, Scenic Opal, Scenic Amber, Scenic Crystal, Scenic Jewel and Scenic Jade; Scenic Sapphire and Scenic Diamond cruise the Rhône, Saône, Dordogne and Garonne Rivers; the Scenic Gem (a custom-built Space-Ship designed for only up to 124 guests) cruises the stunning Seine River in France and can access the top of the Seine with unique ability to take patrons to the port commune of Honfleur; the Scenic Azure cruises along the Douro on a round trip from Porto for up to only 96 guests.

The Scenic Club loyalty program rewards guests with exclusive offers and savings, like priority access and private transfers, pre-release notification for handcrafted land journeys and ultra- luxury cruises, complimentary pre- or post-cruise hotel stays, and more.

Regent seven seas cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises (formerly known as Radisson Seven Seas Cruises) is an ultra-luxury cruise line headquartered on the US east coast at Miami in Florida.

RSSC markets itself as ‘the most ‘inclusive’ luxury experience’ cruise company, explaining ‘every journey is as varied as the travellers taking it, so we offer thousands of included unlimited shore excursions to explore however you please when sailing to over 550 ports of call’ across the globe, while experiencing the security, comfort and ‘our heritage of perfection’ aboard the

6 luxury vessels and the ‘freedom that comes with our lavish, personal, unrivalled space at sea’.

RSSC says ‘every destination we sail to harbors treasured experiences waiting to be unearthed, and there’s no better way to dig in than by taking advantage of our hallmark inclusion of thousands of wonderful, unlimited shore excursions’.

With Regent’s ‘Most Inclusive Luxury Experience’ offering, guests are invited to ‘take hold of every moment and make life-long memories by making your voyage your own with custom enhancements and allowing our crew to take care of every detail on an all-inclusive cruise’.

RSSC’s fleet includes the Seven Seas Grandeur (744 guests, 548 crew, 372 suites), Seven Seas Voyager (698 guests, 455 crew, 349 suites), Seven Seas Navigator (496 guests, 365 crew, 248 suites), Seven Seas Explorer (744 guests, 548 crew, 372 suites), Seven Seas Splendor (746 guests, 548 crew, 373 suites) and Seven Seas Mariner (700 guests, 459 crew, 350 suites).

Upon completing a first voyage, patrons are automatically welcomed as members of the Seven Seas Society, conferring many exclusive rewards and benefits.

Seadream yacht club

SeaDream Yacht Club – a private, family-owned cruise line headquartered at Oslo, in Norway – was founded in 2001 by Norwegian Atle Brynestad (who also founded Seabourn Cruise Line in 1987 and served as both chairman of Cunard Line and a board member of Carnival Cruise Lines).

SeaDream launched with twin mega- yachts, SeaDream I and SeaDream II, and its famous marketing slogan ‘It’s Yachting, Not Cruising: Enjoy The Difference’ defines the company’s mission: to ‘provide a casual yachting experience that exceeds guests’ expectations as they explore the world’s most amazing destinations. This is our pleasure.’

When designing SeaDream Yacht Club, Brynestad ‘knew it would be the attention to detail and all-important impeccable service that would define yachting in the true sense of the word’.

Whether dining al fresco or in the salon, relaxing by the pool or enjoying a spa treatment, playing a round of golf in a golf simulator or taking a mountain bike ashore and exploring the port of call, guests ‘know they are experiencing the most personalised and pampered holiday at sea’.

SeaDream I and SeaDream II itineraries are designed to call upon the most intimate ports, harbours and yachting playgrounds that larger ships cannot reach. From May through October, they sail the Mediterranean Sea; from November through April, they visit the turquoise waters of the Caribbean.

The twin mega-yachts SeaDream I & SeaDream II are intimate boutique ships with 95 crew members catering to only 112 guests in 56 staterooms, making each visitor feel they are on their very own private luxury yacht.

Ritz-carlton yacht collection

The ultra-luxury Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, launched in October 2022, represents the first luxury hotel brand to enter the cruise industry, operating a fleet of 3 super yachts designed specifically for high-end travellers.

The brand is owned by Marriott International and aims to cater to affluent guests who may not have previously considered cruising as an ‘ultra-luxury’ vacation option. The collection primarily targets Ritz-Carlton loyalists and Marriott Bonvoy members, with about 75% of customers new to cruising – a strategy which reflects a focus on attracting guests accustomed to ultra-luxury, land-based experiences rather than traditional cruise travellers.

Hence Ritz Carlton’s first ship Evrima – highlighting its spacious suites and personalised service – accommodates just 298 passengers, to emphasise a more intimate cruising experience compared to larger cruise lines. On- board offerings include exceptional spa treatments in one of 5 private rooms, plus full-service beauty lounge, gentleman’s grooming salon, as well as sauna, steam room and quiet zones.

The larger Ilma – featuring 224 airy, light-filled suites, all with private terraces – accommodates 448 guests, but trumpets the ‘highest ratio of space-per-guest at sea’.

And the latest addition to the fleet is the Luminara which embarks on its inaugural Mediterranean voyages in 2025; it accommodates 452 guests and features 226 suites with private terraces.
