Volumisers (also called biostimulators) differ from dermal fillers in that they stimulate the patient’s skin to produce more of its own collagen and elastin over a period of weeks or months, to gradually restore more youthful and pleasing facial contours.
Sculptra, comprised of Poly-L-lactic acid (which occurs naturally in the body), is a flexible product that can be used to contour and volumise the face for a natural, three-dimensional effect. It offers a gradual alternative to the more immediate results of dermal fillers.
Injected deeply into the skin, Sculptra stimulates the fibroblasts (the key cells in connective tissue that produce collagen) to fill wrinkles and sunken areas as well as tighten the skin.
The amount of Sculptra injected at each session and the number of treatments required varies for each patient depending on volume loss and specific concerns. Results are subtle and progressive over a number of months and can last around two to three years. It is also designed to improve the skin’s overall texture and luminosity.
Other ‘bio-stimulating’ injectables provide instant as well as gradual results.
Ellansé is a new addition to the Australian market. Patients can see instant smoothing, plumping and rejuvenating results but its key ingredient, Polycaprolactone (PCL), stimulates the body’s own collagen production and improves the skin’s natural elasticity over time. Results can last from one to four years, depending on which of the four variants is chosen for use.
Radiesse is a long-lasting injectable filler made from calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHa) microspheres suspended in a water-based gel.
Radiesse has a two-fold effect: on injection it immediately restores volume and it prompts a process known as neocollagenesis, stimulating the growth of new collagen in targeted areas. It is not suitable for the lips. Results generally last 12 to 18 months.
