The cosmetic surgery trends set to sweep 2017

2017 is tipped to be the year of bigger bums and smaller busts.

With plastic and cosmetic surgery constantly evolving, so too are trends and ideals. Our current obsession with social media and the proliferation of selfies has called attention to personal appearance on a whole new level, creating a shift in what is perceived as ‘normal’.

So, what will be popular in 2017?

There are a few prominent trends on the rise for 2017. Surgeons saw a huge spike in the number of patients seeking buttock augmentation during 2016 – and the trend continues to gain momentum.

Fuelled by curvy stars like Jennifer Lopez and the Kardashian-Jenner clan, the popularity of fat grafting procedures such as the ‘Brazilian Butt Lift’ (BBL) is only set to increase. BBL combines liposuction and body contouring with buttock augmentation to increase the size of the rear. But be warned, this is major surgery and has gained media attention throughout the world for a significant number of botched procedures, some of which have even ended in death. Proceed with caution!

While bums are getting bigger, breasts are getting smaller – including the nipple. Plastic surgeons have revealed a growing trend for smaller, more ‘natural-looking’ breasts and smaller nipples thanks in part to the ‘wellness’ movement and trend for lean, athletic figures (just take a look at Instagram).

It has been reported there is a 30 per cent rise in women requesting a smaller nipple size in the last year, which is tied into the trend towards smaller breast augmentation sizes.

Compared to several years ago, the average size has gone from a Double DD or E cup to a D-C cup.

With the ‘wellness’ movement going from strength to strength, and the rise of lean, athletic body types (á la every Victoria’s Secret Angel), it appears over-inflated chests are officially out. Smaller nipples and implants complement this new trend of a lean, ‘shredded’ body.

The old staples will still stick around in 2017, such as anti-wrinkle injections, fillers as well as surgical procedures such as liposuction and tummy tucks.
