Dark Under Eye Circles

Dark under eye circles can be caused by natural ageing, the environment as well as lifestyle factors. We explore some ways to minimise or eliminate them.

Why Do We Get Dark Under Eye Circles?

Dark under eye circles are caused by environmental aggressors, as well as lifestyle habits like late nights, sun exposure, excessive alcohol intake and smoking. The natural ageing process also contributes. Poor lifestyle choices can be controlled, but others, like physical skin changes, are trickier to manage.

Natural ageing and loss of volume around the eyes causes lines, wrinkles and dark under-eye circles. The skin becomes transparent, which means the fine capillaries and blood vessels in this area are easily noticeable. They appear as dark under eye circles. Dark under eye circles may also be a hereditary condition. This means if your parents experience them, it is likely you will too.

Can Diet Help?

Skin care and nutrition experts advise that a healthy diet high fresh, fibrous whole foods can help, as can drinking plenty of purified water. Avoid stimulants like caffeine and nicotine, as well as stodgy foods.

Do Eye Creams Work?

Topical eye creams can temporarily restore moisture and cleverly applied make-up can disguise dark under eye circles. However, no cream has the power to turn back time. Skin care experts advise using eye cream to maintain skin quality. This can minimise the further appearance of dark under eye circles.

Can Salon Treatments Minimise Dark Under Eye Circles?

There are many in-salon pampering treatments boost lymphatic drainage and circulation in order to brightening the eyes. However, the effect isn’t long lasting. Treatments should be repeated about once every six weeks.

What Cosmetic Procedures Can Help?

The use of strategically injected Hyaluronic Acid dermal fillers can lift the skin away from the veins and encourage light to bounce off the skin. This is known as tear troughing. It is a very effective, affordable and efficient method of eliminating dark under eye circles.
The minimally invasive procedure also naturally replenishes lost moisture and restores volume, refreshing the entire eye area.

These treatments take around 30 minutes. Patients can go straight back to work. Results are immediate and can last up to two years.

Are there more permanent surgical options?

Lower blepharoplasty, or lower eyelid surgery, can be used in conjunction with filler and laser treatments to give long-lasting results.

Lower blepheroplasty involves making an incision on the inside of the lower eyelid to access the tissues of the eyelid. The orbital fat can then be repositioned. When the fat is repositioned, it improves the appearance of the dark circles, while maintaining a natural-looking appearance.
