By now, dear CosBeauties, you would have heard about CoolSculpting. It’s the world’s No 1 non-invasive body contouring treatment with over 8 million treatments administered across 74 countries and backed by over 20 years of research. Suffice to say, it has been a leader in non-surgical fat reduction since it first entered the aesthetics market back in 2005.

We want to know more, we hear you cry! So we’ve delved a little deeper to answer your top questions about this ground-breaking fat-busting technology.

1. How does CoolSculpting work?

CoolSculpting uses a process called cryolipolysis that was developed by Harvard scientists. It works by selectively freezing and subsequently damaging the fat cells underneath the skin while preserving the skin and surrounding tissues.

Following treatment, a proportion of the targeted fat cells enter apoptosis (fat cell death) and the body naturally metabolises the fat and removes the dead cells over a period of 12 weeks or so.

Once your practitioner has taken some measurements and positioned you for treatment, a gel pad is applied to your skin and then a special applicator is used to suction the fat between two cooling plates.

We’re all about efficiency and that’s why we love the fact that CoolSculpting treatment can take as little as 35 to 75 minutes, depending on the area treated. Multiple areas can be treated at the same time. All you need to do is lie back and relax. Simple.

2. What areas of the face and body can CoolSculpting treat?

Your CoolSculpting technician can create a personalised treatment plan to help you achieve optimal body contouring results. CoolSculpting is indicated for use on numerous body areas, including:

  • Abdomen (tummy)
  • Flanks (love handles)
  • Submental (double chin)
  • Upper arms (bingo wings)
  • Brassiere roll (bra puff)
  • Back (bra fat)
  • Pseudogynaecomastia (man boobs)
  • Inner thighs
  • Outer thighs (saddle bags)
  • Around the knees (distal thighs)
  • Under the buttocks (banana rolls)

3. Can it really treat my double chin?

Yes, it can! With the CoolSculpting Mini applicator, excess fat under the chin can be permanently reduced, creating the look of a sharper jawline and more contoured chin area. Goodbye, double chin! Hello, chiselled jaw!

4. Is CoolSculpting safe?

There have been more than 8 million CoolSculpting treatments performed around the world. The efficacy and safety of CoolSculpting is backed by over 60 peer-reviewed publications and protected by 159 patents relating to the cryolipolysis technology.

CoolSculpting technology delivers precisely the right level of controlled cooling to target the fat cells underneath the skin, whilst leaving the skin and other cells undamaged. This procedure does not use needles or surgery.

Freeze Detect® is CoolSculpting’s inbuilt safety technology, designed to stop treatment if it detects the skin is getting too cold.

5. How do I know if I’m a good candidate?

Generally, if you can grab a roll of fat, you are suitable for CoolSculpting! (It’s not intended as a weight loss procedure though so if you are very overweight, you may not be a suitable candidate.)

6. Does CoolSculpting treatment hurt?

You will feel a suction sensation as targeted area is sucked into the applicator and then it will feel cold but there should be no pain.

The patented CoolControl monitors uses an intelligent feedback loop to continually track your body temperature and deliver the optimal temperature needed for comfortable treatment without compromising on results.

7. How will I feel immediately after?

The treatment itself doesn’t normally require any downtime. Straight after CoolSculpting, the area treated may have some residual numbness and look a bit like a block of butter (due to the suction effect of the applicator) – but this will subside over the next couple of hours.

8. When will I see results?

Reduction in fat volume is gradual, as your body naturally metabolises the fat cells over the next several weeks. Generally, though, you can expect to see results from around 6 weeks and reach full effect by the 3-month mark. For best results, usually multiple treatments are recommended, spaced 6 weeks apart.

9. How much fat reduction can I expect?

Studies have demonstrated fat layer reduction of up to 27% reduction across multiple treatment sites.

10. Are the results permanent?

Yes – provided your weight doesn’t fluctuate too much. How good is that?!
