Winter skincare essentials

Frosty winds and indoor heating can leave skin parched, flaky and susceptible to irritation. we share our favourite products to help you navigate this seasonal skin conundrum and maintain a hydrated and healthy complexion.

During the winter months, cold, dry air outdoors and heated air indoors can strip your skin of its natural oils, and hot showers and baths only enhance the problem. To make matters more complicated, your skin’s microbiome compensates for the dryness by producing more sebum, potentially clogging pores and exacerbating acne.

At the heart of maintaining healthy, hydrated skin lies the critical task of strengthening its protective barrier. This outermost layer, known as the stratum corneum, acts as a guardian, preventing excessive water loss and shielding your skin from environmental aggressors. When this barrier becomes compromised, dryness, sensitivity and a host of other skin woes can ensue.

To bolster your skin’s defensive line, seek out skincare products enriched with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides. These potent hydrators work in tandem to lock in moisture and reinforce the skin’s barrier function, ensuring optimal hydration levels.

Layering: the art of moisture retention

To arm your skin against winter’s bite, start layering – not just your clothing but also your skincare products. A good rule of thumb is to start with the lightest product, such as a serum, before applying heavier creams or oils. SPF should be the final protective layer, no matter the time of year.

Enhance the efficacy of your routine by gently massaging your skin in circular motions when you apply product. This not only promotes better absorption of the active ingredients but also stimulates blood circulation for a healthier looking complexion.

Kick off your am routine with a mild cleanser, such as a gentle cleansing milk, to avoid over-drying or stimulating excess oil production. Follow with a facial mist or hydrating essence for an extra dose of refreshment and moisture.

Next apply a moisturising serum – hyaluronic acid is a staple in winter, but you can tailor this step to target specific skin conditions. These concentrated formulas penetrate deep into the skin, delivering a potent dose of hydration and soothing benefits.

Now it’s time to fortify and seal in all that added hydration with a moisturiser. Opt for formulas enriched with Vitamin C, antioxidants and calming botanicals to help combat inflammation and brighten your complexion.

For those seeking an extra layer of protection, the next step is incorporating a facial oil into your routine. These occlusive formulas create a barrier that locks in moisture and prevents further water loss. They should be appled after your mosturiser.

Last but not least, apply SPF. Don’t be fooled by the cooler temperatures – the sun’s rays will still penetrate and cause damage. Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen as the final step in your routine is crucial for shielding your skin from harmful UV exposure.

Super charged serums

In the battle against winter dryness, serums emerge as potent allies. These concentrated formulas pack a powerful punch, delivering a targeted dose of hydration to quench even the thirstiest of complexions.

Hyaluronic acid serums: Hyaluronic acid is a natural humectant that can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, making it an indispensable ingredient for plumping and hydrating the skin. Look for serums that feature this moisture-magnet.

Peptide-infused formulas: Peptides are the building blocks of proteins. When incorporated into skincare, they can help strengthen the skin’s barrier and promote a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Multi-tasking serums: Some serums offer a comprehensive approach to hydration, combining multiple active ingredients for a synergistic effect. Formulas that blend hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and antioxidants offer a potent hydrating, brightening and anti-ageing trifecta.

Booster serums: Designed to be used in conjunction with your regular moisturiser, booster serums provide an extra shot of hydration when your skin needs it most.

Thirst- quenching masks and mists

Sometimes our skin craves an intensive dose of hydration, and that’s where masks and mists come into play. These targeted treatments offer a concentrated burst of moisture, reviving even the most parched complexions.

Overnight masks: Overnight masks work their magic while you sleep, replenishing your skin’s moisture levels and leaving you with a radiant, well- rested glow.

Sheet masks: For convenient and hygienic application, sheet masks offer a luxurious hydrating experience, infusing your skin with a potent blend of nourishing ingredients.

Multi-step masks: Some masks employ a multi-step approach, combining various products for a comprehensive treatment that can target specific skin conditions as well as hydrating and rejuvenating.

Hydrating mists: Mists provide an instant boost of moisture and can be used throughout the day to refresh and revitalise your complexion.
