Big skincare mistakes can cost more than money, they can compromise your skin’s longterm health.
Shonagh Walker speaks to skincare therapist Amelia Goff, founder and owner of Fresh Face Skin, about the most common errors she sees in her clinic and the simple changes that can make all the difference.
1. More means better (one of the big skincare mistakes to avoid)
Many people believe that more steps and more products equal better skin. Amelia says this often causes overstimulation, barrier damage and sensitivity. Longterm skin health comes from using products with thoughtful formulations that work synergistically, not from piling on mismatched actives.
Her advice? Strip it back. Choose fewer products with balanced blends of actives. Beware of high percentages — stronger doesn’t always mean better. Often, a lower concentration used consistently works more effectively and safely over time than a one-off high dose.
It’s a good idea to look out for skincare sets tailored to your skin concern. It can shave minutes off your skin routine time down, as well as cut costs. Once you determine your skin concern, look at bundles like the ones available at Fresh Face Skin. There are options for acne and congestion, pigmented and uneven complexions, redness and sensitivity, dryness and of course, ageing.
2. Chasing Quick Fixes
Skin concerns can easily affect confidence and the way we show up each day. Chasing fast results often backfires. Quick-fix products may contain harsh actives that may temporarily mask issues, while stripping the skin’s natural defences. This leaves the barrier weak and prone to flare-ups.
Anything that promises instant results is a red flag. Focus on restoring hydration, replenishing oils and supporting your skin’s natural repair processes. Real change happens slowly and sustainably with consistency and care.
3. Lack of Education – One of the Biggest Skincare Mistakes of All
One of the most common big skincare mistakes Amelia sees is people making choices based on trends or marketing hype, rather than understanding what their skin actually needs. Take control of your skin by seeking trusted sources like articles on websites like CosBeauty, videos, short courses or professional advice. When you understand how your skin works and how ingredients interact with it, you make more confident choices that bring better results.
4. Expensive doesn’t always mean effective
Amelia, who’s worked with products ranging from $30 to over $400, and says emphatically, “price does not determine performance.” Some pricey products cost more because of brand name, packaging and even importation taxes, not necessarily the quality of the formula.
Focus on what’s inside the bottle. Learn to read labels, understand ingredient lists and check if a brand aligns with your values. Expensive does not always mean better — informed choices do.
5. Giving Up Too Soon
Many people give up on a routine just as the skin starts to adjust. Introducing new products can trigger a normalisation phase with dryness, congestion or texture changes. This is not failure — it is your skin recalibrating, says Amelia.
“True results take time. Stick with a routine for four to six weeks before making changes unless you experience burning or irritation, which means the barrier needs immediate support.”
