One of the joys of a new season is refreshing not only our wardrobes but also our makeup routines. As trends shift, it’s important to choose looks that genuinely suit our features and make us feel confident. Makeup should be playful and expressive, yet it also functions as a key accessory—much like the right shoes or handbag—capable of elevating our entire look.
Hair and makeup artist Mia Hawkswell, renowned for her work across editorial, commercial and celebrity projects, has built an impressive following thanks to her fresh, modern approach to beauty. We were fortunate to secure time with Mia to dive into the must-know makeup trends for the summer season.
1. What’s different about our makeup this summer compared to last summer?
We’re seeing a strong shift towards skincare-focused makeup. Think peptides, SPF with coverage and hydration, lip oils infused with peptides, and powders formulated with hyaluronic acid.
2. Should we be choosing tinted sunblocks instead of foundation?
Yes. Lightweight formulas that offer protection, hydration and sheer coverage are ideal for warmer weather and humid climates. Fortunately, there are now excellent options across all price points.
3. Are lips big this summer?
We’re still seeing softly sculpted lips, but gloss is making a huge comeback. A lightly lined lip paired with a tinted gloss is a quick, easy and polished summer look.
4. Are eyes big this summer?
To an extent. Cream eyeshadows are perfect for the season—there are brilliant formulas that apply easily, set well and won’t budge in the heat.
5. Should we focus more on our skin’s condition as the best base?
Absolutely. Healthy, well-prepped skin will always help your makeup perform at its best.
6. Do you have makeup tips for those who aren’t very confident with makeup?
Choose lightweight formulas and focus on what feels comfortable, not just what you see during the doom scroll. Give yourself time to experiment so you know what works—then you’ll be able to create your everyday look in five minutes. It becomes muscle memory, and you’ll learn which steps you can skip when you’re short on time.
7. Are brushes better than fingers for applying makeup?
It depends on the formula. Sheer lightweight tints can be applied beautifully with fingers, and cream shadows blend well using your ring finger. Generally, the thicker the product, the more it benefits from a brush. For example, apply concealer with a brush and tap it out with a finger, while a thicker foundation blends best when buffed with a brush for a flawless skin finish.
