Let’s be honest — finding the perfect foundation can feel like a full-time job. Most women will tell you they’ve tried product after product, only to be left feeling frustrated by formulas that just don’t quite work for their skin.
Chances are, your makeup drawer has at least a few foundations gathering dust — the ones that didn’t quite live up to the promise. And for some women, foundation doesn’t even make it into their routine at all, often dismissed for feeling too heavy or too ‘done’.
To demystify the process and help you find the one — the foundation that actually works for you and becomes your go-to beauty essential — we turned to global makeup expert Rae Morris for her expert advice.
Here are her tips:
- A flawless foundation doesn’t start with the product — it starts with your skin. Hydration is everything. As we age we naturally lose collagen, elasticity and moisture, so prepping with rich serums, nourishing creams or even facial oils is essential. Your complexion should feel plump, dewy and juicy before a single drop of makeup goes on.
- When it comes to application, skip the sponge. A good brush is your best friend, like the JISHAKU #26: RADIANCE BRUSH (RRP $220) or the JISHAKU #27.5: MICRO RADIANCE BRUSH – TRAVEL (RRP $116) from my own range. Brushes buff foundation seamlessly into the skin, smoothing over any fine lines or imperfections for a flawless finish. The result? Foundation that looks like your skin — only better
- Glittery or high-shine foundations (and primers) might look tempting, but they tend to highlight every little imperfection, especially in natural light. Instead, reach for foundation formulas that are packed with hydration. These melt into the skin and give a healthy, radiant glow without the sparkle. My favourites include the Givenchy Prisme Libre Glow Serum Foundation (RRP $100), Smashbox Always on Skin Balancing Foundation (RRP $79), Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Lift and Firm Cream Makeup (RRP $75), Jones Road Just Enough Tinted Moisturizer (RRP $78). Bonus: CC creams often include anti-ageing skincare benefits and light coverage in one, which makes them a smart multitasking choice, try By Terry Brightening CC Foundation (RRP $134).
- Want that your-skin-but-glowier effect? Opt for foundations that enhance rather than mask. Lightweight, luminous formulas with a skin-like finish are key. The best ones feel like you’re wearing nothing at all, while subtly boosting radiance and evening out tone. My top pick; Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Foundation (RRP $120) it’s iconic for a reason. Some other special foundations to try; Jones Road What the Foundation (RRP $82), Fenty Beauty Soft’lit Luminous Foundation (RRP $64), Huda Beauty Easy Blur Natural Airbrush Foundation (RRP $66), Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Gel Tint (RRP $65), Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor Huez SPF 30 Tinted Moisturizer (RRP $54).
- Forget setting powders — especially if you have dry or mature skin. Instead, go for creamy highlighters and balms that softly reflect light and keep skin looking fresh, Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream (RRP $35) works well. If you need to reduce shine in specific spots, gently tap in a mattifying product like the Rae Morris Invisible Mattifier (RRP $88) with your fingers or use a small buffing brush such as the JISHAKU #6.5: ANGLE EYE BLENDER BRUSH (RRP $99) for a soft-focus effect
- Don’t stop at your face — your décolletage deserves a little love, too. It’s one of the first areas to show signs of sun damage and often gets forgotten in your SPF routine. Buff a bit of foundation or bronzing body product such as Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs (RRP $25) with a brush across the decolletage to even tone and create a seamless finish. It’s an old makeup artist trick and it works wonders.
- For the best colour match, test your foundation on the side of your face — not your neck or hands, which can be quite a different shade. And don’t be afraid to switch shades with the seasons; most of us are a little warmer in summer and paler in winter.
- Refillable foundations are having a moment — and we love to see it. Not only are they chic and luxurious, but they’re also a more sustainable choice for your beauty routine. It’s glam and green. Prada has brought out Prada Beauty Reveal Skin-Optimizing Soft Matte Foundation (RRP $135), a new refillable foundation.
- Finally, if you need your base to go the distance (think long days, events, or zero time for touch-ups), look for long-wear foundations that hold their own from morning to night. The best ones won’t cake, fade or settle — they simply stay flawless. Try YSL All Hours Foundation (RRP $105) and Revlon ColorStay Foundation – Normal/Dry (RRP $39.95). They both will look as good after hours of wear, as when first applied!
Finding the right foundation doesn’t have to be overwhelming — it just takes a little knowledge, the right prep, and a formula that truly works with your skin. Whether you’re after a radiant everyday glow, a flawless long-wear finish, something that feels like second skin or a combination of all three, there’s a perfect match out there waiting for you. Think of your foundation routine as an extension of your skincare — it should feel good, look effortless, and leave you feeling confident in your own (beautifully prepped) skin.
